Jill’s talk described how a small amount of spore can produce many ferns, while also requiring patience and careful attention to growing conditions.
Start with clean, labelled material
The notes describe collecting ripe spore, separating it from debris, and labelling the growing container. Different spores retain their viability for different periods, so prompt sowing can matter.
Watch moisture and development
The society’s notes emphasise checking the growing medium itself rather than assuming condensation means it is wet. Young growth needs attentive care as it develops.
Move gently to the next stage
Once young plants are ready, thinning, potting and gradual hardening-off help them adjust from an enclosed environment. Ask an experienced member to help with your first attempt.
